The mother of a 20-year-old man who died after the car he was driving crashed into a bridge says she has lost her "rock".

Oliver Jones was driving home when he "lost control" on a right hand bend on the A59 at Sawley, in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire police said.

Mr Jones, of Settle, North Yorkshire, suffered head injuries in the crash at 04:50 BST. He died at the scene.

His mother, Carol Jones, said: "The hole he leaves will never be filled."

'Sadly missed'

Ms Jones said: "He was well liked and very popular and recently returned to his first love football, and played for the first team at Settle United.

"His main passion was to socialise with his friends.

"He will be sadly missed."

The A59 Clitheroe Road was closed in both directions for six hours while accident investigations were carried out.

Sgt Mick Young said: "At this stage we do not believe any other vehicles were involved but an investigation is underway.

"A police family liaison officer is supporting Oliver's family at this difficult time."
