Blackburn father held over home alone children

A father has been arrested on suspicion of neglect after five children aged from three months to 12 years were found alone in their Lancashire home.

A health visitor alerted police when she received no answer at the Blackburn house but could see the children inside on Tuesday.

Police forced entry to the house, which was described as dirty, and the children were taken into protection.

The 35-year-old father was arrested on his return and released on bail.

Three other children living at the house were collected from school by social workers, police said.

Four of the children in the house were taken to hospital for check-ups.

The mother was believed to be out of the country, police said.

Paul Lee, head of safeguarding at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "I can confirm we were alerted by police to an alleged case of child neglect.

"We have taken appropriate action to make sure the children are protected."
