Payday loan sites blocked by Blackburn with Darwen Council

Access to payday loan firms has been blocked from public computers in libraries and other council buildings in part of Lancashire.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council said it took action over concerns about "people getting into a spiral of debt".

The lenders offer short-term loans, but have been blamed for landing people in long-term financial difficulty because of high interest rates.

Residents are advised to use credit unions instead.

Councillor Andy Kay, executive member for resources, said: "Ultimately it is up to people what they do with their finances but I would urge people to think long and hard before going to these companies.

"There are other ways and better alternatives. Go to ethical lenders such as credit unions."
