Woman found on Morecambe beach believed to have drowned

Police believe a 51-year-old woman whose body was found on a beach in Lancashire drowned.

Susan Alston, from Lancaster, was found by a passer-by on the central beach, near Morecambe's clock tower, at 05:30 BST on Saturday.

Det Supt Neil Esseen said her death was not being treated as suspicious and he was satisfied no-one else was involved.

He said police are still trying establish how she came to be in the water.

Ms Alston had been on a night out with friends in Morecambe on Friday and the last reported sighting of her was at 02:00 on Pedder Street.

Mr Esseen said she was white, around 5ft 2ins (1.58m) tall with fair hair and was wearing black trousers, black wedge shoes, a blue top and a beige jacket.

He described her death as "absolutely tragic".
