A clean up operation is under way in Lancashire following the worst September storm for 30 years.

There are no flood warnings and just two flood alerts still in place in the county for the River Douglas and for the Crossens area.

Authorities say the road and rail network is getting back to normal.

Heavy downpours since Sunday have swollen rivers and flooded hundreds of homes and businesses across parts of the UK.

Some roads remain closed in Hest Bank and Morecambe while Bottomdale Road in Hest Bank has been closed between the A6 Slyne Road junction and the Foundry Lane junction.

Powder House Lane in Morecambe has also been closed due to flooding between the B5321 Torrisholme Road junction and the Hasty Brow Road junction.

Disruption eased

The Environment Agency has issued an alert for the River Douglas from Parbold to where it merges with the River Ribble including Rufford, Mawdesley, Hesketh and Longton and the Crossens area which includes Ormskirk to Southport including, Banks, Birkdale, Brown Edge, Mere Brow and Scarisbrick.

Garstang Community Primary School had to close on Tuesday because of flooding in classrooms, but has reopened with three out of eight classrooms out of action.

Heavy rain and flooding on Tuesday led to holidaymakers being moved from Cala Gran Holiday Park in Fleetwood.

There have been train cancellations between Blackpool North and Preston because of a landslide at Weeton, on the Wigan Wallgate-to-Southport line and the Blackburn-to-Clitheroe lines.

There were also delays elsewhere in the county including the Preston-to-Lancaster line.

BBC weather forecaster Laura Gilchrist said the worst of the rain, which has caused disruption to thousands of people across England and resulted in homes being evacuated, disruption to train services and road and school closures, had eased.
