Man, 25, charged over pedestrian's death in Blackburn

A man has been charged over a hit-and-run incident in which a 70-year-old woman died in Lancashire.

Freda Holt was starting to cross Revidge Road in Blackburn when she was struck by a silver car on Monday.

Salim Chand, 25, of Iddesleigh Road, Preston was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

He appeared at Blackburn Magistrates' Court and was remanded until a hearing at Preston Crown Court on 2 February.

He is also charged with using a motor vehicle without insurance and driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

A 28-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice has been bailed until 15 November.

Mrs Holt had three children and six grandchildren.

She was a keen churchgoer and yoga teacher for 30 years, and was going shopping when the incident took place.
