A Lancashire woman has won a national teaching award.

Joanne Martin, who teaches at Blackpool's Highfurlong School, has been honoured in the UK Teaching Awards.

She received the DFE Award for Enterprise in recognition of her work in encouraging students at the special school.

Ms Martin has started up more than 80 small businesses at Highfurlong, providing pupils with work experience.

One Highfurlong pupil is now planning to set up her own photographic business after Ms Martin arranged her work experience with a local agency.

Ms Martin was one of 12 recipients of a gold plato, a symbol of excellence in education, in the ceremony staged at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London.

She has been teaching for 25 years and moved to Highfurlong in 1996.
