Suspicious fire at derelict Burnley homes

A fire which swept through a row of terraced houses in Lancashire is being treated as suspicious.

About 30 firefighters tackled the flames at 10 derelict properties on Accrington Road, Burnley, on Saturday night.

Nearby businesses were evacuated after part of the roof collapsed on to the road.

Fire crews brought the fire under control within about two hours and no-one was hurt in the incident.

Severe fire

Four houses were badly damaged in the blaze, which began at about 2230 BST.

Crew manager Andy Coulton described the fire as "severe" and said it was important to evacuate the nearby takeaways, taxi offices and late-night shops.

"A bit of the roof collapsed and it came on to the roadway so the decision was made to just get them out of harm's way," he said.

Mr Coulton said the fire was being treated as suspicious and investigators were at the scene.

"We're working closely with Lancashire Constabulary to try and find the cause," he added.
