A search has been launched for a missing kayaker in the River Medway.

The Medway UK Coastguard is leading a land, air and sea search after the man was reported missing by a family member at 23:00 BST on Tuesday.

The report was made around the same time the National Maritime Operations Centre received a call reporting a drifting kayak.

The Sheerness Inshore Lifeboat found the drifting vessel in the River Medway.

A coastguard helicopter, two RNLI lifeboats and a police helicopter also joined the search.

Ian Guy, for the UK Coastguard said: "Despite an intensive search of the river and estuary, from Rochester to the Kingsnorth Power Station, we have been unable to locate the missing kayaker. Our search continues."
