A man was crushed to death by a telegraph pole on an industrial estate in Kent.

The wooden pole struck the man, aged in his 40s, on the Kingsnorth Industrial Estate in Hoo at about 08:10 BST on Thursday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of people at the scene to keep him alive.

Police described the incident as an industrial accident and said a report would go to the coroner.

Witnesses said he was crushed to death by a pole that was being loaded at I&A Communications.

A spokesman from the firm said: "Currently this is a police investigation and we are working with the police and HSE (Health and Safety Executive).

"At this moment in time all of our thoughts are with the family."

The manager at Kingsnorth Waste Management told the BBC that the incident, which happened near their unit, involved a man who was not one of their employees.

She said employees did their best to help the man but could not keep him alive.
