More than 60 firefighters have been at the scene of a blaze in Kent which destroyed the roofs of two houses.

Three homes in High Street, West Malling, were evacuated after fire started in the roof of one property and spread to the one next door.

At its height, 10 fire engines and two height vehicles attended the blaze, which broke out at 23:30 GMT on Friday.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the blaze was not yet known.

A spokesman said the "very serious" fire threatened to spread to a third roof but was contained by firefighters.

High Street, Water Lane and St Leonard's Street were closed while emergency services were at the scene.

A fire also destroyed a house in St Philips Avenue, Maidstone after it broke out just after midnight and spread to both floors and the roof.
