Petition to stop animal exports through

A petition calling for an end to the export of live animals through the Port of Ramsgate has been published on the government's website.

It calls for port owners to be given the right to refuse the shipment of live farm animals.

Companies began exporting from the Port of Ramsgate in May despite the opposition of Thanet District Council, which owns the port.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has said animals are well treated.

The campaign's organiser and Thanet District Councillor, Ian Driver, said: "This is a unique and exciting chance for the people of Thanet to play a role in changing the law of the land."

Britain started exporting live calves to the continent for veal and beef again in 2006, after the lifting of a decade-long EU ban imposed to prevent the spread of BSE.
