Kent fire crews warn over danger of chimney fires

Fire crews have issued a warning over the dangers of chimney fires after being called to 13 incidents in a week.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said residents were turning to open fires during the recent cold weather.

Head of community safety Stuart Skilton said the service had been called to fires in Pembury, Paddock Wood, Edenbridge and Langton Green.

There have also been fires in Ashford, East Malling, Upnor, Sissinghurst and Headcorn.

Mr Skilton said: "It has been a long cold winter and we are urging residents with open fires to get chimneys swept and flues checked to ensure they are still safe to use.

"The majority of these types of fires are preventable and the risk of damage to your home and injuries to loved ones can be reduced just by ensuring that chimneys are swept regularly."
