Alert sees Tunbridge Wells shopping centre evacuated

A shopping centre and multi-storey car park were evacuated and roads were closed in a Kent town while police dealt with a suspicious package.

Officers cordoned off the Royal Victoria Shopping Centre in Tunbridge Wells at about 1045 BST on Saturday.

A police spokeswoman said Army experts carried out a controlled explosion on a rucksack which proved to be harmless.

The shopping centre fully reopened and members of the public were allowed back in at about 1445 BST, she added.

Kent Police had advised drivers and shoppers to avoid the area after a number of roads in the area were closed, including Camden Road.
