Case review brings second jail term for Kent rapist
A convicted rapist has been given a further six-year prison term for raping another woman at knifepoint in Kent.
Stanley Daniels, 57, formerly of Blackbull Road, Folkestone, was already serving nine years for a rape in Folkestone in March 2005.
He pleaded guilty on Monday to raping a teenager in Sandgate in 1989 and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court.
He will serve the six-year prison term after the original nine-year term has ended, Kent Police said.
After the sentencing, Det Insp Dave Withers said new developments in DNA technology enabled police to find a one-in-a-billion match with Daniels and charge him.
Mr Withers said 21 years had passed since the attack, and the victim had lived with it every day.
In the early hours of 20 October 1989, the 18-year-old victim was walking along the promenade on Sandgate Esplanade when she was approached by a man wearing a balaclava.
He threatened her with a knife before pulling her to the ground near the sea wall and raping her.
Daniels, who was working as a fisherman, fled the scene, leaving his victim to find a nearby phone box and call the police.
Mr Withers said: "The damage done to a young woman's confidence and self-esteem by an attack like this cannot be underestimated."
He said in such cases victims could spend years "looking over the shoulder wondering if the person walking past them in the street or standing next to them in the supermarket queue could be their attacker".
Simon Ringrose, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said Daniels had little alternative but to plead guilty, after being faced with the evidence.
Officers from the cold case investigation team re-opened the investigation last year.
Samples from the victim were re-examined by the Forensic Science Service.
When DNA taken from Daniels matched the samples, he was charged in April this year.
He was due to face trial but instead pleaded guilty.
Daniels was sentenced to six months in a detention centre in 1971 for indecently assaulting a 16-year-old girl.
