Queenborough Yacht Club dinghy fire treated as arson

A fire on a boat moored at a yacht club on Sheppey could have been started deliberately, police said.

Emergency teams were called to the scene on a rigid inflatable dinghy at Queenborough Yacht Club during the early hours on Thursday.

Kent Police said the vessel was destroyed and the incident was being treated as suspected arson.

Det Sgt Neil Kimber said two men seen in the area at the time could have important information.

He said the pair were seen walking along the all-tide landing at about the time the fire took hold.

They entered the area at about 0120 BST and left at 0250 BST.

"We are very keen to trace the men, who could have valuable information about how the fire started," he said.

Det Sgt Kimber said windows in a boat moored next to the dinghy were also broken and he was confident the two incidents were linked.

Forensic evidence has been taken from the boat with damaged windows in a bid to find who started the fire.
