Gillingham shop worker hits would-be thief with hammer

A robber attempted to raid a post office in Medway but ran off after a shop worker hit his hand with a hammer, police have said.

Officers said the offender went into the post office in Byron Road, Gillingham, at about midday on Friday, and threatened the man working there.

After the man approached the counter, the shop worker struck his hand.

Police said the would-be thief could have suffered an injury and appealed for information.

Det Con Jo Paine said: "This was obviously a shocking incident for the shopkeeper.

"However, the offender may have suffered an injury to his hand and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time on Friday to come forward"

Nothing was stolen in the incident and the shop worker was not hurt.
