A 56-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in a village.

He was arrested by police on Tuesday after reports the 52-year-old victim had died at a house in Main Street, Buckton, near Bridlington.

A Humberside Police spokesperson said: "We are investigating the incident and looking to establish the circumstances of how the woman died.

"A post-mortem will be carried out at the earliest opportunity."

Councillor Richard Burton, who runs an art gallery in the village, said the community was shocked.

"Buckton is a quiet village. It's a very strong community. Like many strong communities people know one another," he said.

"It's a very big shock to have such a major incident in a small village like this."
