A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a bag from a 73-year-old woman who died four days later, Humberside Police have said.

Pamela Roddis, from Sheffield, had her bag stolen in Bridlington on 26 January. She died on 30 January from a brain haemorrhage.

Officers believe the stress may have contributed to a decline in her health.

A force spokeswoman said a 32-year-old, from Bridlington, was arrested following a "huge public response".

She said the man was arrested on suspicion of theft after he handed himself in earlier.

Ms Roddis, from Sheffield, was robbed of £300 cash and her mobile phone while on a break in the East Yorkshire resort.

Police said: "Although her ordeal in Bridlington cannot be evidentially linked to her death, PC Robert Brigham, the investigating officer, and her brother, Barry Neilson, believe the stress and upset of the theft may have contributed to her deterioration in health."
