Fire destroys bell tower of Humberston church

The 15th Century bell tower of a North East Lincolnshire church has been destroyed by fire.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service was called to St Peter's Church in Humberston at about 0120 GMT on Monday.

The fire, which involved 30 firefighters, caused the bell tower staircase to collapse, stonework to crumble and debris to fall.

The main part of the church was also smoke-logged. It is believed an electrical fault caused the fire.

The fire service said tackling the blaze was "awkward" because it had to access the building without breaking any windows or forcing any doors because of their historical importance.
