Man badly burnt in Scunthorpe sub station

A man has suffered severe burns after becoming trapped in an electricity sub-station in Scunthorpe.

Crews from Humberside fire service were called to rescue the 22-year-old from the sub-station in High Stanton just before midnight on Thursday.

Group manager Mark Toplass said it was a "traumatic incident" and crews were unable to get to the man until the electricity supply had been turned off.

Police said they were investigating how the man came to sustain his injuries.

A police spokesman said the man was taken Scunthorpe General Hospital before being transferred to Pinderfields Specialist Burns Unit in Wakefield, where he is being treated for severe non-life threatening burns.

The fire service has issued a warning to people to stay away from sub-stations.

Mr Toplass said: "This was a traumatic incident for the crews which attended.

"I would like to commend the professionalism of not only the firefighters but also the members of the police and ambulance service and the engineers from Yorkshire Electricity who all worked together to make an effective rescue."
