A man is in a critical condition after he was attacked in Hull.

Police said the 23-year-old was one of six men who were asked to leave a taxi on Beverley Road after they started arguing in the early hours of Saturday.

The man was assaulted close to the junction of Strand Close and Beverley Road shortly afterwards.

He was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary where he is said to be in a critical condition. A man aged 33 was arrested in connection with the incident.

Possible witnesses

He remains in police custody.

The nature of the 23-year-old man's injuries has not been revealed.

Humberside Police said they wanted to speak to several possible witnesses to the attack, which happened at about 0215 BST.

They included a white man wearing light blue jeans and a black long-sleeved top who was seen walking in the bus lane away from the city centre with a mobile phone to his right ear.

Detectives also said they wanted to speak to the driver of a car, believed to be a Renault Clio, which was parked nearby, and a group of people seen stood in a bus shelter.
