Pilot escapes from aircraft fire in Worcestershire

A pilot is lucky to have escaped injury after his light aircraft caught fire in midair, Hereford and Worcestershire Fire Service said.

The pilot had to make a controlled landing in farmer's field in Knighton, near Inkberrow, Worcestershire, during Thursday morning.

Fire crews called to the scene found a fuel spillage and said a small fire in the cockpit had already been put out.

The pilot was unhurt. Fire crews said he did well to land the plane safely.

Phil Griffiths, station commander at Redditch, said: "The pilot did really well to land the aircraft safely, especially considering it was fully loaded with fuel at the time."

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. Police and the Civil Aviation Authority have been informed.
