Cash fund for Herefordshire youths will be scrapped

A scheme which allows young people to choose youth projects in Herefordshire is to be scrapped.

About £700,000 has been spent on more than 300 initiatives over five years under the Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Fund.

Herefordshire Council said the scheme, which funded the skate park in Holmer Road, Hereford, will end in March 2011.

The government funding was frozen in April and the scheme will end because of Spending Review cuts, it said.

Councillor Jenny Hyde, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "We have seen some wonderful events and activities organised because of this fund over the last few years and will be sorry to see it go.

"All the grants have gone to groups of young people who have organised activities for other young people.

"The application process itself has been a learning tool for them all and has empowered them to not only have a say in activities they want to see in Herefordshire, but to get involved in providing them too."

The council wants to hear from people involved in projects funded under the scheme to mark their achievements at an event next year.
