Plans for a private crematorium on green belt land on the edge of the New Forest have been approved despite more than 100 objections being lodged.

Outline permission was granted for the chapel and parking, north of New Milton.

Protesters gathered at the proposed site, off Stem Lane, on Saturday to show their opposition.

The New Forest Crematorium Company said the scheme had been devised to meet local demand.

New Forest District councillors approved the scheme with 12 votes in favour and two against.

Objections included fears over pollution, health risks, increased traffic, visual impact, house prices, noise and the loss of green belt land.

Developers said the facility was aimed at easing increased demand on crematoria at Bournemouth, Poole and Southampton, while giving residents the option of a local service.

The plans include parking for 100 cars and a ceremony hall for 100 seated and 100 standing.

They also include a book of remembrance pavilion, waiting room, offices, toilets, reception and memorial garden.
