Thirteen rescued form burning block of flats in Southampton

Thirteen people were rescued from a block of flats in Southampton after a fire in a first-floor kitchen.

A man was rescued by firefighters from the burning flat in Lydgate Road, and a woman fled the property.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue crews from Hightown and St Mary's were called to the scene at 02:30 GMT.

Three more people were rescued from the balcony of a neighbouring flat with a ladder and eight others were led outside by firefighters.

South Central Ambulance Service said a 20-year-old man was taken to Southampton General Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
