A man is in a life-threatening condition after apparently being assaulted on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire Constabulary has cordoned an area of St James' Street in Newport after a man was found injured just before 04:00 GMT on Sunday.

A spokesman said it appears the man was assaulted and he is currently being treated at Southampton General Hospital.

He asked people to avoid the area while officers continue to investigate.

Road closures are in place between McDonalds and the junction with Trafalgar Road, as well as at the junctions with Chapel Street and Orchard Street.
