New Year's Day Southsea murder: Suspect in court

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Southsea on New Year's Day.

The body of Christopher Butler, 27 was found at a flat in Waverley Road at about 00:25 GMT.

Brendon Michael Willis, 32, of no fixed address appeared at Winchester Crown Court - he was remanded to reappear at the court on 24 March.

A 41-year-old man, from Southsea, arrested on Thursday on suspicion of the murder remains in police custody.

Police have also been given more time to question two men, aged 29 and 48, both from Southsea, arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A 33-year-old man, and a 23-year-old woman, both from Portsmouth and arrested on suspicion of murder, have been bailed.
