A Hampshire road closed because of a gas leak will not reopen until Wednesday at the earliest.

Engineers from gas distributor SGN were called to Rowner Road, Gosport, at just after 04:00 GMT.

It was closed between the roundabout at Grange Road and one at Fareham Road and two nearby homes were evacuated.

A spokeswoman for SGN said repair work to stem the flow of gas would continue overnight and the road would "potentially" reopen on Wednesday.

She said: "We're having to bring in additional specialist equipment to complete the work as it involves considerably more excavation than first anticipated."

Motorists reported traffic disruptions were being caused by the road closure during the rush hour earlier.
