Hampshire plan for hospital on Waltham greenfield site

A £150m critical treatment hospital could be built on a greenfield site near a Hampshire village.

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to ask for residents' views on building the hospital near North Waltham at J7 of the M3.

The development on the north side of the A30 would treat people with major injuries or severe illness.

Most patients would be cared for in hospitals in Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester, the trust said.

The proposed site "is the shortest possible ambulance time for our whole population" and gives "rapid access to the major road system for our area and access for air ambulances" according to the trust.

Critical treatment, such as that provided for patients who have suffered heart attacks, strokes or major injuries, accounts for 15% of all care the trust provides.

There would also be 24-hour consultant cover for women in childbirth at the proposed hospital.

Consultation is to begin as part of the pre-planning application process.
