'Butchered' horse found dismembered in bags in Bursledon

The dismembered body of a horse has been found dumped near Southampton.

The horse, described by the RSPCA as a young bay, was found in bags by rail workers next to railway tracks off Salterns Lane, Bursledon, on Tuesday.

The charity said the horse had been "butchered" with its head, torso and legs removed - flesh had also been stripped from its body.

RSPCA inspector Penny Baker said: "I thought I had seen some horrible sights, but this is by far the worst."

She added: "There was no way of identifying the horse or determining the exact cause of death, or whether the animal had suffered, because of the state of the carcass."

The charity said it was dealing with a horse "crisis" following a dramatic rise in the number of horses being abandoned or neglected.
