Police investigating the death of a man found unconscious in an alleyway have been given more time to question a man arrested on suspicion of murder.

Kevin Wyeth, 31, from Southampton, was found off Defender Road, Woolston, at about 02:30 BST on Saturday.

Post-mortem tests showed he died from head, facial and neck injuries.

A Bournemouth man, 31, was arrested on suspicion of murder. A 25-year-old woman was also arrested, but has since been released without charge.

Hampshire Police said the woman, from Southampton, continues to assist police as a witness in the investigation and is receiving specialist support by officers.

'Devoted father'

Mr Wyeth was found close to the cut-through with Tankerville Road. Despite attempts to revive him, he died at the scene.

In a statement Mr Wyeth's parents, Linda and Kevin, said they were in shock over his death and described him as a "very loving and devoted father" to his three children.

"He will always be in our hearts and will be sadly missed by all his family and many friends," they added.

Detectives said he was seen in Wharncliffe Road at about 22:30 BST on Friday.

Anyone who saw or spoke to him after that has been urged to contact Hampshire police.

Mr Wyeth was wearing a white sweatshirt with blue lettering across the chest and dark trousers. He was carrying a white carrier bag.
