Solent coastguard alert over inflatables

The coastguard has warned people of the dangers of using inflatables on beaches after a surge in 999 calls.

Solent Coastguard said it had received about 40 emergency calls in one 10-minute period over reports of adrift inflatables along the Hampshire coast.

A spokesman said: "If one's been blown offshore we've still got to respond in case someone is missing or in genuine difficulty."

The coastguard advised people to tether inflatables to something on the beach.

People have been urged to call the Solent Coastguard on 02392 552100 if their inflatable goes adrift with no-one onboard so a rescue can be ruled out.
