A footballer was driving a car which hit and critically injured a pedestrian in Portsmouth, it has emerged.

West Brom and Scotland under-21 player Scott Allan, who is on loan at Portsmouth, was driving an Audi Q7 when it hit the man in Southsea on Friday.

Allan, who was sent off in Portmouth's FA Cup tie against Notts County on Saturday, was unhurt in the crash and was not arrested.

The pedestrian is critically ill at Southampton General Hospital.

Hampshire Police said it was investigating the incident and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Portsmouth FC confirmed Allan had been involved in an incident but would not comment further.

The club recently re-signed the midfielder on a month-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old played 15 times while on loan at Pompey last season.

He joined West Brom from Dundee United for £300,000 in January on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
