An exhibition space for contemporary art has opened in Southampton city centre.

John Hansard Gallery Central is housed at the city's former tourist information centre, and will host a year-long programme of exhibitions.

It is part of Southampton University's John Hansard Gallery.

In 2015 the gallery will relocate to the old Tyrrell & Green department store site as part of an arts complex to be built in Southampton.

The first exhibition at the temporary gallery showcases the work of artist Jennifer Anyan.

She said her exhibition Embodied Memories was created using people's memories of clothes and items bought from Tyrrell & Green.

The shop occupied a prime spot on the edge of Guildhall Square for most of the 20th Century and was demolished in 2009.
