Woman dies after bungalow fire in Southampton

An elderly woman has died after being rescued from a fire in her home in Southampton.

More than 20 firefighters were sent to tackle the fire at the bungalow in Osborne Road South in the Portswood area of the city.

It broke out early on Saturday morning and the woman was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

The bungalow was badly damaged by the fire, which was thought to have started accidentally.

Electric blankets

Police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have begun an investigation to find out what caused it.

Bob Wythe, fire service area manager, said they believed the pensioner did not have a working smoke alarm.

He added said: "We all have a responsibility to look out for the safety of vulnerable people in our communities, particularly as the colder weather sets in, and gas fires, heaters, and electric blankets are switched on.

"If you know someone that may have difficulty fitting, maintaining and testing their smoke alarm, why not offer them your help."
