Gloucester hospital knife murder accused pleads guilty
A former patient at a hospital for the mentally ill has pleaded guilty to murdering a healthcare assistant.
Ryan Matthews, of Gloucester, appeared at Bristol Crown Court via video link, to admit killing Sharon Wall.
He stabbed Ms Wall, 53, also of Gloucester, on 9 July, at the inpatient unit of Wotton Lawn Hospital.
Matthews, 62, of Horton Road is due to be sentenced in January. Ms Wall's employers described her as "highly compassionate and dedicated".
Det Ch Insp Steve Porter said: "Our thoughts are currently with Sharon's family and we will continue to support them through this difficult time.
"The family are relieved at this early guilty plea, but are still devastated at their loss and will only begin to get closure once Matthews is sentenced in the new year."
Ms Wall's family had previously described her as "nothing less than one in a million".
A spokesperson for Ms Wall's employer, 2gether NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We continue to offer our deepest sympathies and support to Sharon's family, friends and colleagues.
"Sharon was a well respected and dedicated Health Care Assistant and is constantly in our thoughts."
