The Gloucestershire towns and villages which the 2012 Olympic torch relay will pass through have been announced.

Cirencester will be the first town the relay will reach on 23 May 2012, before it heads to Stroud, Painswick, Brockworth, Shurdington and Cheltenham.

After an overnight stop in Cheltenham, it will head to Gloucester, Maisemore, Hartpury, Corse and Staunton.

The torch will arrive back in the county briefly on 1 July when it visits Chipping Campden.

Cheltenham Racecourse will hold a special celebration event on 23 May when the Olympic flame arrives in the town.

It will be carried up the racecourse on horseback for the final leg of the day's journey before the event begins.

Councillor Andrew McKinlay, Cheltenham Borough Council's cabinet member for sport and culture, said: "The facilities at the racecourse are second to none and provide the opportunity for many thousands of local people to come along and witness a moment in history."

Gloucester City Council leader Paul James said he was "delighted" the city had been chosen as one of the locations.
