A project to regenerate the centre of Newent in Gloucestershire has been awarded a £72,000 European grant.

The Forest of Dean Local Action money will be used to install new paving at the town's historic 1668 Market House.

Other improvements include new tree planters and brown and white tourist signs.

Peter Street, project manager for the Newent Initiative Trust, said the funding would be of "great benefit" to the town.

"Events like the Onion Fayre are big crowd-pullers for the town centre and completion of this project will add to the town's attraction," he said.
