A man has been killed and another seriously injured after two stabbings in a town in 10 hours.

He was found dead in Ryegate Road in Colchester, near the town's Castle Park, with a stab wound in his back at 08.20 GMT on Monday.

It follows another stabbing at 21:55 on Sunday. A 40-year-old man was stabbed in the back in George Street and taken to hospital.

Essex Police is treating the two attacks as linked.

Detectives launched a murder inquiry after the discovery of the dead man but said it was at an early stage.

The other man suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

Det Supt Stephen Jennings, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said police were linking the two stabbings.

"This is because of the close proximity of the locations where the men were found," he said.

"We believe these were targeted, isolated attacks and we will be working round the clock to find whoever is responsible."

Councillor Darius Laws said: "People in the area are really concerned, and the [street] lights are going to be kept on later this evening."

A resident, who did not give her name, said she felt anti-social behaviour in the area had been on the rise.
