A badger has been rescued from a 10ft-deep (3m) drain after a dog walker was dragged to the spot by her pets.

The woman was walking her dogs in Brentwood on 21 February when she was pulled to an uncovered drain.

RSPCA officer Joe White said he had to lie flat and "really stretch" to pull the animal to safety.

"He was very feisty," Mr White said. "He appeared well so I decided to release him instead of subjecting him to any more stress."

It is not known how long the badger had been in the drain, which on Warley Hill, Warley, but it was said to be "clearly quite distressed".

"He ran off really fast so obviously knew where he was going," Mr White said, adding that a large drain cover which was nearby was put back in place.
