Man admits murder after attacking couple in bungalow

A man has admitted murdering a woman in her own home and seriously injuring her husband.

Colleen Westlake, 48, was found dead at the bungalow in Pines Road, Chelmsford, on 17 April. Her husband Victor was badly hurt and is still suffering the effects of the assault.

At Chelmsford Crown Court, Craig Bird, 32, pleaded guilty to murder and causing grievous bodily harm.

He is due to be sentenced on Tuesday.

Det Ch Insp Stephen Jennings said: "I am pleased that Bird has admitted his guilt in court and has saved witnesses and Mr Westlake the ordeal of reliving the events of that day."

A post-mortem examination found Mrs Westlake died from blunt force trauma and strangulation.
