Colchester flat fire death: Second arrest by murder police

A second person has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a pensioner who died in a fire at his flat.

The victim of Sunday's blaze in Rochdale Way, Colchester, has been named as 78-year-old Fred Payne.

A post-mortem examination found the provisional cause of his death to be smoke inhalation, Essex Police said.

A 45-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned on suspicion of murder. Police also arrested a 42-year-old woman from Colchester on Sunday.

Det Ch Insp Stephen Jennings, leading the police investigation, said the victim and the female suspect were known to each other.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
