A man who abandoned a car on a railway line following a police pursuit went on to climb on the roof of a hospital he was taken to.
Essex Police had given chase after the 26-year-old failed to stop in Thurrock at about 04:15 BST.
He was arrested after his Volkswagen Polo came to a halt on railway tracks at Pitsea and taken by officers to Basildon Hospital.
He climbed on to the roof at 08:30 BST and was talked down six hours later.
He was re-arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, theft of a motor vehicle, criminal damage, and endangering life on a railway line and is in custody.
Rush hour services between Pitsea and London Fenchurch Street were affected throughout the morning as the car was winched from the tracks.
