Charges have been dropped against a senior firefighter accused of indecent assaults more than 25 years ago.

Mark Wilson, 51, of Thorley Park, Bishops Stortford, faced five charges relating to when he was a fire training officer in Witham, in 1989 and 1990.

He was formally found not guilty by Judge Christopher Ball at Chelmsford Crown Court after prosecutors said they were not proceeding with the case.

Mr Wilson previously pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Mr Wilson was not present and not represented for the brief hearing, during which prosecutor Stephen Rose told the court: "There isn't a reasonable prospect of conviction."

Judge Ball said the CPS had had the "benefit" of independent counsel.
