The A12 in Essex was closed in both directions for most of the morning after a lorry struck a bridge.

It happened at Kelvedon at about 08:50 BST when at low-loader carrying a crane hit the Ewell bridge and drove off.

Essex Police said both carriageways were reopened by 13:00 BST, but they want to track down the lorry driver.

The Highways Agency said it was safe to travel underneath the structure, but it is closed to the farm vehicles which use it to cross the A12.

The lorry was travelling north when it hit the bridge causing debris to fall from it onto the carriageway.

Police said another driver saw the lorry stop in a lay-by and then continue north towards Colchester.

A Highways Agency spokesperson said: "The damage has been inspected by contractors and the bridge has been closed for vehicles travelling over the A12 for safety reasons.

"A more detailed inspection will be carried out in the near future to allow for a detailed assessment of the damage and determine long-term repair."
