Cats wake owners in Essex flat fire

Three women were rescued from a fire at a flat in Essex after being woken by their cats.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service was called to the ground floor property in Pennymead in Harlow at about 01:10 GMT.

The women told firefighters they had not heard their smoke alarm, but had been woken up by their pets.

A spokesman for the fire service said the women, together with a man from the flat above, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Harlow station officer Steve Pritchard, said: "The fire was by the front door of the flat which was the only way out, so the three women inside did exactly the right thing, they stayed in a bedroom with the door closed to keep smoke to a minimum."

A joint police and fire service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
