More than 1,000 people were evacuated from an Essex nightclub in the early hours of Sunday.

The fire broke out in the ceiling of a first floor stage area at the Liquid and Envy club, on Basildon's Festival Leisure Park.

Four crews tackled the fire. A woman was treated for smoke inhalation and a man suffered burns to his lower arms.

Divisional officer Stuart McMillian, incident commander, said "it is too early to say what caused the incident."

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to tackle the fire, which was under control by 02:15 GMT.

'Measured' evacuation

Crews then used a high-pressure fan to clear the nightclub of smoke.

Mr McMillian said: "Some 1,100 people were being evacuated from the building as crews arrived at the scene, fortunately there were no major injuries.

"The fire has damaged the staging area and some of the internal furnishings in one area of the nightclub."

Club manager Darren Guyon thanked his customers for the "controlled and measured way in which they evacuated the building".

A joint police and fire service investigation is now under way to establish the cause of the fire.
