A man has appeared in court in connection with an attack by a dog on a seven-year-old boy on an Essex beach.

The boy was bitten while paddling in the sea with his grandmother at Southend on 5 August last year.

Rowan Diedrick, 29, of Avenue Road, North London, was charged with being in charge of a dog which was dangerously out of control.

He was released on unconditional bail after entering no plea at Southend Magistrates' Court earlier.

He will next appear at Basildon Crown Court on 19 March.

The boy suffered 20 wounds to his torso and arms.
