A father of three found dead at his home in Essex had been a carer for his 92-year-old mother, his family have said.

Roy Sly, 53, was found in his flat in Westcliff on 10 January.

His sister Barbara and brother Bob said he had a "heart of gold" and shared in the care of his mother.

A man and woman charged with his murder were remanded in custody at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday and are due back at the same court on 2 April.

In a tribute released by Essex Police, Mr Sly's brother and sister said he was a loving man who cared about his family.

"His love for his mother was unquestionable and he helped look after her, providing meals and sharing the care of her through the night.

"Every time we see her she asks why he has not been to see her, it breaks our heart.

"His life was cut short, he was taken away from us all too soon. He had a heart of gold and would have helped anyone."

A post-mortem examination carried out on 11 January was inconclusive.

The results of further tests are expected back in several weeks.
